Trump gives China another ultimatum, giving ByteDance 75 days to divest from TikTok.
Trump’s ultimatum to China: 75 days for ByteDance to remove TikTok from US territory
US President Donald Trump granted another 75 days this Friday to reach an agreement to disassociate the Chinese company ByteDance from the TikTok app in the United States.
“My Administration has worked hard to reach an agreement to SAVE TIKTOK, and we have made considerable progress. The agreement requires more work to ensure all necessary approvals are signed, so I will be signing an executive order to keep TikTok operating for an additional 75 days,” he said on his social media platform, Truth Social.
Trump added that he hopes to continue working “in good faith with China”: “We do not want TikTok to disappear. We look forward to working with TikTok and China to close the deal.”
The Republican leader also highlighted China’s displeasure with the tariffs his administration has imposed on the Asian giant. “As I understand it, she is not very happy with our reciprocal tariffs (necessary for fair and balanced trade between China and the US!). This shows that tariffs are the most powerful economic tool and very important for our national security,” he concluded.
This week, Trump announced that he would be willing to grant China tariff relief as long as it approves the pact being developed to disassociate ByteDance from TikTok in the US.
The app faced the deadline set by Washington on Saturday for disassociating itself from its Chinese parent company in the US.
The previous Congress, under former Democratic President Joe Biden (2021-2025), passed a law requiring TikTok to find an investor from a state that was not considered an “adversary” by January 20, when Trump took office.
After failing to reach an agreement, the app went down for a few hours in the United States until the Republican, on his first day back in the White House, signed an executive order granting a 75-day extension, a deadline that was set to expire this Saturday and has just been extended.
Trump explained on Thursday that TikTok has “multiple” interested investors, but did not name them. According to US media, the race to acquire the popular app is being led by Amazon, Oracle, and the founder of OnlyFans.
