We’re talking about three alternatives that, at least for now, will be available only through the OpenAI API. This means their use will be limited to development. We’ll have to wait and see if any of them will also be available in ChatGPT, where we can currently choose from a variety of models using the selector.

The arrival of these new models raises an inevitable question: where do they rank compared to OpenAI’s other proposals? The company claims they outperform GPT-40, introduced in May 2024, “in almost every dimension.” In fact, it claims they even improve in some respects on GPT-4.5, launched earlier this year.
